  • Carlos Mendoza's 4th-grade son marked only B and F as correct in a Santillana exercise on numbers up to the billions. The platform's solution marked B, D and F, but D said '9,615 rounded to the billions is 10,000', which is false. When Mendoza asked ChatGPT to review it, it first said Santillana was right, reading 'billions' as if it were 'thousands'. Only when Mendoza pointed to the exact word did ChatGPT acknowledge the error. The son had been right from the beginning.

  • Nikunj Kothari's daughter had just started kindergarten, and the daily meal was posted on a website with messy, unstructured data. Kothari asked Claude Code to find the site's API by looking at its network requests; it turned out to be unauthenticated, and Claude Code worked out the right format and handed it to the family's existing Hermes bot. Now their home bot tells them each morning what's for breakfast and lunch so they can pack food to match.

  • SriSakthi Saravana Prabhu's younger child had a Kannada exam the next day after a week off school with fever, and the textbook was likely left at school. The parent can speak Kannada but can't read or write it, and the exam questions come from the exercises at the end of each lesson. They found the Grade 3 textbook as a PDF on the Karnataka education portal and uploaded it to ChatGPT. Within seconds it gave answers, and the child confirmed they were the ones needed. Some pages came back without answers, but uploading those pages separately filled the gaps.

  • Jessica McKellar volunteers as chair of the parent advisory committee at their daughter's two-campus preschool. When the school changed food programmes and got a lot of parent feedback, it ran two weeks of classroom surveys tracked on paper. McKellar photographed the sheets and gave them to Gemini, which turned them into spreadsheets of raw data, analysed and summarised them in a management report for the administrative team, and drafted an email for the school to send parents explaining the results.

  • Lisa Durant's almost-9-year-old has special needs, struggles with reading and resists books without pictures, so reading homework often ended in meltdowns. For the spring-break assignment (20 minutes of reading at least five times, any material), Durant asked ChatGPT for a short, silly, age-appropriate story about tornadoes, the child's special interest, starring the child and a younger sibling, and had the child read it aloud. The child soon started writing their own prompts for new stories, and reads them without protest, picking up good vocabulary along the way.

  • The poster asked ChatGPT for a math practice worksheet for their fourth-grade daughter. Its first attempt, an HTML page, didn't work. It then rendered a personalised practice game directly in the chat, which worked perfectly; the daughter's verdict was 'beat that IXL!', the homework software her school assigns.

  • Find why a child's science-fair electromagnet wasn't working on a Gemini Live video callRecreated promptEvidence: Described by posterBeginner-friendly

A Hacker News commenter and their 10-year-old couldn't get an electromagnet experiment for the school science fair to work. On a Gemini Live video call, Gemini went through the possible causes and spotted that the insulation hadn't been scraped off properly at the end of the wire connected to the battery, which the parent couldn't see. The apparatus then worked as expected, and the commenter says the child and two friends were impressed.

  • Elly Walsh's teenage daughter has ADHD and dyslexia, and the family had been worried about her falling behind. Instead of banning ChatGPT for homework, Walsh had her type a prompt asking it to break the work down step by step for how her brain works. It split the work into short steps with clear explanations, one thing at a time, and Walsh says their daughter sat calm and focused, working through it slowly instead of having another meltdown.

  • A teacher and dad shared a prompt for parents stuck on new homework methods: ask Grok to break down 3426 × 5 using area models and partial products, with activities. The post lists the activities Grok suggested, including a sticky-note breakdown, a quick area-model sketch with colour-coding, and a 'Break It Down Race' to practise splitting numbers by place value.

Ahead of their son starting a new school, the poster gave Gemini's Storybook Gem some background and his interests, uploaded a photo of the two of them, and got a short illustrated picture book. The poster, who works in education technology, plans to make more social stories this way.
